Emergency Safety Shower & Eyewash Standards

Regional & International Compliance Guidelines for Safe, Effective Decontamination

When lives depend on rapid response, your safety equipment must meet strict compliance standards—no exceptions. At Sava Safety Engineering Services, we design and manufacture emergency showers and eye/face wash systems that adhere to the highest global and regional standards—ensuring your facility is protected, approved, and audit-ready.

This guide outlines all relevant compliance standards for emergency decontamination equipment across the Middle East and Gulf region, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

ANSI Z358.1-2014 – U.S. Safety Standard (Most Widely Used Globally)

Published by the American National Standards Institute, ANSI Z358.1 sets out the minimum performance and installation requirements for:

  • Emergency showers

  • Eyewash stations

  • Eye/face wash units

  • Combination shower/eyewash systems

  • Self-contained and tank-fed systems

  • Inspection and maintenance procedures

Key ANSI Requirements:

Shower Flow Rate

Minimum 76 L/min (20 GPM) for 15 minutes

Eyewash Flow Rate

1.5 L/min (0.4 GPM) minimum

Water Temperature

16°C–38°C (tepid water range)

Activation Time

Must activate in ≤ 1 second

Hands-Free Operation

Must remain on without user assistance

Location

Reachable in ≤ 10 seconds from hazard

Weekly Activation

Required to ensure flow and readiness

Annual Inspection

Full functional audit and certification

International Standards Overview

EN 15154 – European Standards

The EN 15154 series is Europe’s equivalent to ANSI, covering both plumbed and non-plumbed systems:

EN 15154-1

Plumbed body showers for laboratories and industry

EN 15154-2

Plumbed eye/face wash units

EN 15154-3

Non-plumbed (portable) body showers

EN 15154-4

Non-plumbed eye/face wash units

While EN standards do not define flow rates as explicitly as ANSI, Duso units meet or exceed both frameworks to ensure global compatibility.

Saudi Arabia Safety Frameworks

In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sava showers and eyewash units are designed to comply with:

  • Saudi Aramco Engineering Standards (SAES)

  • SABIC HSE guidelines

  • Royal Commission for Jubail & Yanbu standards

  • Saudi Civil Defence inspection requirements

We regularly supply units for Aramco and SABIC projects with full supporting documentation including:

  • Inspection & flow test reports

  • ATEX certifications where applicable

  • Site commissioning and sign-off documentation

ATEX & IECEx Compliance (Explosive Environments)

For installations in hazardous areas (Zone 1 or Zone 2), safety equipment must comply with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU or IECEx standards.

Applicable to:

  • Offshore platforms

  • Petrochemical zones

  • Gas compressor stations

  • Paint, battery, or flammable chemical processing plants

Sava ATEX-Ready Options:

  • ATEX-rated immersion heaters (Zone 1)

  • Explosion-proof chiller systems

  • Flameproof electrical junction boxes

  • Stainless steel non-sparking activation systems

  • Earth bonding and grounding kits

Installation, Inspection & Maintenance Standards

  • Weekly Testing: ANSI requires activation to ensure flow and valve readiness

  • Annual Inspections: Full compliance verification with written documentation

  • Thermal Testing: Temperature must be within 16°C–38°C (documented if audited)

  • Signage & Illumination: Units must be clearly marked and well-lit

  • Accessibility: Units must be located within 10 seconds of a known hazard

  • Drainage: Required to prevent flooding or contamination in cleanroom zones

  • Commissioning Reports: Required for UAE Civil Defence and Saudi compliance

Sava provides site-specific inspection plans, BIM files, and re-certification services as part of every installation.
